Causes of premature labour

In more than 50% of cases the cause of preterm onset of labour is not known. The following are related with increased incidence of preterm labour :

A. History -

  • Previous history of induced or spontaneous abortion or preterm delivery.
  • Asymptomatic bacteriuria or recurrent urinary tract infection.
  • Smoking habits.
  • Low socio-economic and nutritional status.


B. Complication in present pregnancy -

 Maternal -

  • pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia, antepartum haemorrhage, premature rupture of membranes and polyhydramnios.
  • Medical and surgical illness such as acute fever, acute pyelonephritis, diarrhoea, acute appendicitis, toxoplamosis and abdominal operation.
  • Chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, severe anaemia.


 Fetal -

  • Multiple pregnancy.
  • Congenital malformation.
  • Intrauterine death.


 Placental -

  • Thrombosis.
  • Placenta praevia or abruption.


 Idiopathic -

  • Premature effacement of cervix.
